Abstract

Is it possible to apply categories of space to questions of social justice? And if
so, how can such an application be devised? The present article undertakes to
establish an initial interpretive outline to help answer these questions. This
endeavor is guided by the insight that finding an application is impossible without
first defining precisely how the term “space” is to be understood. The complexity
of this subject matter requires several cycles of clarification and Differentiation
both on the level of the spatial model and on the level of spatial concepts. These efforts result in the following conclusion: It is only productive to relate space and social justice to each other if space is configured according to a relational model and if the concept of space is developed to a level of complexity that is high enough to also integrate interpersonal, social and cultural determinants. What is the added analytical value of such an application? Commensurate to the complexity of the spatial concept, it can be identified at various levels and to varying degrees. It begins with the insight that even the mere conceptualization of space contains forms of power and ends with an enhanced awareness for concrete acts of spacing, i.e., acts of arranging
goods, resources.
