Abstract

Modern societies are pluralist entities, in a normative sense among others. The current debates about normative plurality revolve to no small degree around law. But although law constitutes part of the plural normative landscape, it also endeavours to organise this land-scape itself. In any case, the ethical debate arising from this dual role requires some initial clarification in the first place: What is law? How can it be distinguished from other social norms, and how does it re-late to them? In this context it is particularly the law of the state which must address the issue of normative plurality without juridifying non legal norms or marginalising non-state law.
