Rerum novarum und die Suche der katholischen Soziallehre nach ihrem emanzipatorischen Potential

Abstract

Vor 120 Jahren hat Papst Leo XIII. das Proletarierelend mit aller nur wünsch-
baren Deutlichkeit angeprangert und zu seiner Lösung vor allem mehr Sitt-
lichkeit und Religion empfohlen. Auch heute, unter liberalistischem Vorzeichen,
erscheint wirtschaftliches Handeln weitgehend »entmoralisiert«. Spätestens
mit der Kapitalmarktkrise haben Markt und Staat ihre Grenzen gezeigt und
die Legitimation unserer Ordnung in Frage gestellt. Der Ruf nach mehr Moral
kann als ein Reflex auf diese Entwicklung verstanden werden. Rerum nova-
rum hat die Bedeutung von Moral für die Lösung der Sozialen Frage hervor-
gehoben, ihre strukturelle Problematik aber nicht angemessen erfassen kön-
nen. Dieses Defizit ist der Anknüpfungspunkt für eine ordnungsethische Re-
lecture der Enzyklika.

One hundred and twenty years ago Pope Leo XIII. denounced the misery of the
proletarian in all clarity and he recommended more morality and religion to solve
the problem. Even today, under an omen of liberalism, economic acting seems
to be quite «demoralized». At the latest with the crisis of the capital market both
market and state have shown their limits and they have questioned the legitim-
ation of our order. The appeal for more morality can be understood as a reflex
on this development. Rerum novarum has stressed the meaning of morality to
solve the «Soziale Frage» (Social Question), but it couldn't comprehend
its structural problems sufficiently. This deficiency is the starting-point for an
ethical rereading of the encyclical as far as social order is concerned.
